Shenandoah Elks Lodge #1122 holds annual Flag Day Ceremony

 

Shenandoah Elks Lodge held their annual Flag Day Ceremony on Wednesday June 14, 2017.   Members of the Shenandoah Boy Scouts Troop 218 assisted with presenting the flags explained by Ed Bonefas who presented the history of the American Flag.  Also, the two top Americanism Essay winners from our Lodge area were present to read their essays to the nice crowd that gathered for the ceremony.  Lu and Alan Armstrong provided the meal that was served following the event.

Members of Shenandoah Elks Lodge, voted to provide funds to install a new Flag pole at the Sportsman’s Park Complex.  Many local organizations came together to help fund improvements at our youth sports venues!  Total replacement of the Tennis Courts, replacement of scoreboards for three Ball Fields and the installation of the new Flag pole.

Members gathered to show support, at the dedication ceremonies for improvements at Sportsman’s Park.

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our Member, Burl Walter Jr.

Gordon Lundgren Funeral Information

On Thursday June 1, 2017 the Shenandoah Elks Lodge hosted Tyson Scott from Wounded Warriors in Action Foundation.  Tyson brought the hunting blind that was purchased with funds from the Freedom Grant through the Elks National Foundation.  Tyson reported that in 2015 82 events with 300 Wounded Warriors were held in North America and one Wounded Warrior was able to attend an African Safari hunt as well.  Tyson reported that $.93 of every $1.00 donated to WWIA goes to support the activities involving Wounded Warriors.

Tyson Scott joined the United States Marine Corps in July of 2003 and served just under 10 years. As a Staff Sergeant, Tyson held various positions at Camp Pendleton, California, as well as a recruiting duty tour in South Houston until late 2012. During Tyson’s first deployment to Iraq in 2006, in support of the CASEVAC mission, a 120mm mortar landed a couple feet away, causing injuries for which he received his Purple Heart. Since leaving the Marine Corps in late 2012, Tyson moved home to Amarillo, TX. He worked for Bell helicopter building V/CV-22’s for the Marine Corps and Air Force.

Tyson became a WWIA Associate in 2015 and travels the country serving his fellow Wounded Warriors. He is an avid outdoorsman who loves to hunt and fish whenever he can.

A nice crowd of Elk Members were present to view the hunting blind at the Lodge.

Americanism Essay Contest

Each year, the Shenandoah Elks Lodge sponsors a program of the Elks’ Grand Lodge Fraternal Committee, this contest is geared towards students in 6th  grade to promote patriotism among young people.

“What the Flag Means to Me”

This is the core theme of our essay contest.

Rules

1. Eligible participants must be Students enrolled in the 6th grade at the time of the contest.
2. Essay length is not to exceed 300 words.
3. Essay must be typed or legibly printed in ink. Also, Essay must be submitted as written (or typed) by the entrant.
4. Essay must be submitted for judging to the Elks Lodge nearest to the address of the entrant.
5. Participant must be identified by name, grade, school attending and sponsoring Elks Lodge on the Essay.

We had outstanding participation this year with one participant placing second at the judging for our Iowa Elks Association state level!  Well done, young people!
